Courses

MSc CBB courses are divided into core courses and advanced courses. Students can take courses at ETH, the University of Basel, and the University of Zurich.

Detailed information on the different course categories within the MSc CBB curriculum can be found in the tabs below.

Core courses provide basic knowledge in the computational biology and bioinformatics area. There are four core subcategories: Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Biosystems and Big Data. The compulsory seminar lecture "Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Seminar" offers insights into latest topics in the CBB area.

Students need to acquire a total of 40 ECTS in the core course category, at least 1 ECTS in every core subcategory, and pass the mandatory CBB seminar.

Important:

  • The list of core courses in the ETH Zurich course catalogue is a closed list. No other course can be added as core course. The assignment of courses to core course subcategories cannot be changed.
  • Some of the core courses are mutually exclusive courses. They are marked with an asterisk in the study plan (see Documents & Templates)

Advanced courses provide specific insights into the areas of computer science, biology and mathematics.

Students need to acquire a total of 30 ECTS in the advanced course category. Thereof at least 16 ECTS in theory and 10 ECTS in biology area.

The list of advanced courses in the ETH Zurich course catalogue is an open list. Other courses can be added as advanced courses by approval of the mentor.

Students need to acquire a total of 2 ECTS in the science in perspective (SiP) category within the master's degree studies.

The ETH course catalogue lists the science in perspective course units under section “GESS – Science in Perspective”, and provides a description of course unit content and lists the requirements for earning the respective credits.

A maximum of 3 ECTS will be recognized for language courses during the entire course of Studies at ETH Zurich (BA- and MA degree together). In addition: For the languages English, French, Italian and Spanish only advanced courses (level B2 upwards) are recognized, and for German language courses level C2 applies.

D-BSSE students may complete a language course at the University of Basel Language Center (Sprachenzentrum) as SiP course, taking into account the restrictions regarding language course levels.
